Level Three

Authenticity and the Emotions.

Degas’ Little Dancer statue is a great representation of owning and determining the expression of our emotions, while allowing them to express who we authentically are.

She portrays young ballet dancers of the Paris Opéra in the late 1800s. Ballet during that time was one of the ways that girls from working class backgrounds could escape poverty. Dancing was not considered a respectable profession then, girls and young women were overworked, exploited and often discarded as their youth and physical resilience waned.

This sculpture conveys a defiant expression and the stance and body language of the little dancer suggests a determination to stand firm in the face of inner turmoil and her uncertain status. She is very young, probably separated from her family, vulnerable, tired, most likely in a lot of pain from dancing injuries. Like her contemporaries, she would hold feelings of fear for her future, sadness for her lot in life which included mistreatment, exploitation, and no doubt there would be anger and frustration as well.

In the face of all this, she stands self contained, in her strength as well as in her vulnerability, and against all odds. She reminds us that we can hold onto our authenticity and sense of self and manage our emotional responses, even in the most challenging situations, by drawing on the awareness of how we feel as well as drawing on our inner resilience.
